Category: Energy
Location: Northern Cape to Western Cape
Key project Details: Construction of the Juno Gromis 400kV, 298 km Long Overhead Transmission lines in Northern Cape to Western Cape along the coast.

Thero Services has been entrusted by Powerline Africa on behalf of Eskom with the responsibility of delivering Health and Safety Services for the Construction of a 400kv transmission line stretching from Juno to Gromis Substation, overseen by Power Line Africa as a component of the Namaqualand Strengthening Phase 2 Scheme. Spanning across Sections A and B, the transmission line is projected to cover approximately 191 kilometres, traversing through the municipalities of Kamiesberg, Nama Khoi, and Matzikama in the Northern Cape and Western Cape regions respectively.

As Thero Services took on the responsibility for health and safety services on the project, they ensured several key factors. These included demonstrating compliance with Eskom’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements, as well as with applicable national and local legislation. They achieved a commendable zero fatalities record and maintained low injury/incident rates, effectively managing SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment) risks to ensure the timely, budgeted, and high-quality execution of the contract. Thero Services prioritized employee training to enhance SHE performance and keep up to date with health and safety standards, contributing to meeting construction targets. They remained committed to zero harm for all individuals working on or visiting the site, while minimizing project instability through the implementation of effective corrective and preventive actions to address health and safety issues and non-conformances.

In conclusion, during the Thero Services appointment, several opportunities emerged from the project. Notably, there was the sourcing of local labour from within the affected communities, which reflects a commitment to community involvement and empowerment. Additionally, the CSI projects, such as the upgrading of infrastructure, installation of streetlights, provision of water, and road maintenance, are commendable initiatives that demonstrate a dedication to improving the overall well-being and development of the area.
