Thero Services has taken on a pivotal role in South Africa's Environmental landscape through their appointment by ESKOM for Environmental services: Wetland Risk Assessment and WULA Application for the DUVHA Power Station
Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd appointed Thero Services to provide professional services to conduct a Wetland Risk Assessment for the Duvha Power Station Village Road Project. Duvha Power Station is a 3 600 MW coal-generated power station located in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. The Power Station is surrounded by several water bodies including wetlands; thus, some planned projects may have an impact on these water bodies during the project construction stage. As per the National Water Act No. 36 of 1998, work executed within 500 meters of a wetland requires a Water Use Licence (WUL) or a General Authorisation.
The impact assessment considered the direct and indirect impacts to the wetland system. The mitigation hierarchy as discussed by the Department of Environmental Affairs (2013) will be considered for this component of the assessment. In accordance with the mitigation hierarchy, the preferred mitigatory measure is to avoid impacts by considering options in the project location, sitting, scale, layout, technology, and phasing to avoid impacts.
